RTW - Choose your own Question-venture

Each week, YA Highway hosts Road Trip Wednesday, a blog carnival in which contributors discuss a topic on their blogs and invite readers to do the same.

This Week's Topic is super interactive:
What do you want to know about writing and getting published?

My question... is how to choose which idea to write?

I am an eternally awful decision maker and struggle to decide what to write. each idea will take a long time to finish and I'm worried about the time investment if I can't pull it off to be as cool as it sounds in my head. At the same time, I can't switch up easily. Sigh... I seem to waste time trying to decide.

Thoughts?

  1. I kinda have the same issue...I have several ideas swirling around in my head and I can't decide which one to write. So, sometimes I start each one. I'll write the first few lines of one idea and then the first few lines of another. Then whichever one "speaks" to me is the one that I continue writing. I sometimes find that some ideas need to stay where they were--swirling around in my head. Good question :)

  2. Don't get stuck in analysis paralysis. My technique is just to dive in. You feel more strongly for different stories at different times. Also, honestly, most stories sound stupid when they're just ideas that haven't been realized. realizing the idea makes it awesome.

  3. I agree with insect - lol sorry that was just one of those thing you only get to type one time in life! I dive in cause I cant' type fast enough....and I do type fast - I have written 2 finished one and started 3 more since july. Oh and edited #1 like 8 times. Dive girl - you need more than one anyway!

  4. I like to do an exercise that I learned from Natalie Goldberg's book Writing Down the Bones: Start a list with "I want to write about..." at the top, and then make a big messy list of all the things you want to write about. You'll start to see themes, or realize that one thing looks much more attractive than another, or come up with a whole new idea.

  5. I recently had this very problem. I was just about to do what Quita suggested above, but then I started thinking about dragons a lot (one of the 6 options included dragons) and then I even dreamed about them so I guess my subconscious picked for me.

  6. Well, I had this exact same question come up in my writing life - so I got the readers of the blog Dark Side DownUnder to help...I listed the stories and got them to say what they thought.

And by reading the comments, you get a feel for what YOU want to start writing.

    Good luck.
