That magic moment

Road Trip Wednesday is a ‘Blog Carnival,’ where YA Highway's contributors post a weekly writing- or reading-related question that begs to be answered. In the comments, you can hop from destination to destination and get everybody's unique take on the topic.

This Week's Topic:

A long-awaited kiss, a surprise ending, a character's sudden decision… these are the moments that make us smile, gasp, and LOVE a book for the rest of our lives.

What is your favorite literary moment?
My absolute favourite literary moment is the twist. And nowhere have i found it better than in Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card.
No spoilers but i never saw it coming and yet it made perfect sense. LOVE that in a book. To pull off that WTF but ah ha moment is brilliant. And so, so hard. it had to be foreshadowed and believable but not predictable. I admit i read it when I was 10 so maybe i was easily transported into suspending disbelief but it's stayed with me a LOT of years.
Oh, and i do love a kiss... one that has been suitably longed for and agonised over.
And a good death. Love to cry.
And a first... well... anything.

Seems I'm easily pleased. What about you?

  2. I'm a sucker for that kiss, and for jaw-dropping twists and revelations. I will definitely have to read Ender's Game sometime.

  3. I loved ENDER'S GAME and the point you mention is probably the number one reason. What a great book! :D

  4. ENDER'S GAME has been on my TBR list for a while. I will read it soon, hopefully! I like those twist moments, too. Though I'm more broadly into game-changers, which could be the twist you didn't see coming, or the thing you knew all along but the characters didn't.

  6. "i never saw it coming and yet it made perfect sense." I love that in a plot twist too...so easy to appreciate but hard to pull off as a writer.

  7. You list some of my favourite twist methods ;) If an author pulls off a really good sudden death, I'll think about it for days.

  8. I love twists! After reading through everyone's answers (and my own) I think I just like good writing. The most well-written scenes seem to be my favorite. Thanks for sharing!

  9. Hmm... I didn't realize ENDER'S GAME is twisty. That might make it jump a few books in the TBR queue :)

  11. Ender's Game was a fantastic book. Have you read any of the rest of the series? I haven't yet because I've heard it's not as good, and I don't want to ruin what I think of the first one.

  12. Very late to the RTW from last week (catching up), but I have heard great things about Enders Game. This just makes me want to read it more. I agree with you on the agonized over kiss. Too many books don't build that up enough.
