When you were young...

Road Trip Wednesday is a ‘Blog Carnival,’ where YA Highway's contributors post a weekly writing- or reading-related question that begs to be answered. In the comments, you can hop from destination to destination and get everybody's unique take on the topic.

This Week's Topic:
What non-YA character would you love to see star in a YA book as themselves?

Thinking about this made me realize that most of my very fave characters are either teens or spend some of the story as a teen. Eventually one sprung (ie crept painfully slowly) to mind.

He's ageless in an ageless book. He has immense power and wisdom and an aura of authority. seeing him as a teen, perhaps uncertain, perhaps going through the struggles that would make him so awe inspiring when we meet him would be so interesting.

I'm talking about Lord of The Rings and I'm talking about Gandalf.

Imagine a YA book about Gandalf? I'd read it!

While I'm on LOTR i think Aragorn could be rather interesting too.

What about you?

  1. Oh I recently read The Carrie Diaries with Carrie from Sex in the City as a YA and I loved it. I'd love to see Bridget from Bridget Jones'Diary. Wonder if I can steal her?

  2. Ooh, great choice in Gandalf. He's so sure of himself and powerful in the Lord of the Rings trilogy... I wonder what he was like as a teen?

  3. Gandalf would be a fantastic idea though I'm not sure about Aragorn. I can't help but think he'd be kind of emo-like.

  4. Oh, a great choice indeed. So hard to imagine him differently, but it might be like with the back story on Dumbledore, where we get a much more multi-dimensional sense of the character.

  5. Oh, man, I think Gandalf as a teen would be nearly unrecognizable from the Gandalf we know. I mean, can you just imagine all the the things he went through in his young life? That would definitely be interesting.

  6. Cool idea! Merlin has been done as a young man a few times on TV, but they would work better in YA...Dumbledore would be cool too.

  8. Thanks for the comments all. I reckon he would have been rather arrogant. And I love the emo-Aragorn!
